Is it just me or has the temperature seriously leveled up its game these past few weeks?
I live in the Pacific North West and this season was unusual by nature so maybe that’s playing into this? By that I mean it went from rain ALL of the time, skipped right over spring, and threw us headfirst into a blazing summer.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining! I used to live in Dallas (which can get up to 110 F) and Southern Florida which is (90+ F) 30 C+)). Simply put, I love the heat. HOWEVER, I would be lying if I said I felt I was handling this well this time around. Admittedly, I feel like my body is struggling to adapt. Who can relate?
I invite you to do a little check in with yourself. Whether its dehydration — I challenge you to stick your tongue out at yourself in the mirror! Yes, you read that right. Check and see if it is white, if so it indicates dehydration.
I feel you.
This week lets tackle a food source that acts as a double whammy, this recipe will hydrate you while providing you with refreshing sustenance.
Summer Delight: Smoothie Recipe
This recipe is easy, nourishing, and despite the presence of veggies (not a taste for everyone, I know), it gets hidden, making it simply delightful!
In a blender combine:
1/2 cup of nut milk (unsweetened almond milk, oat milk etc.)
1 handful of blueberries (frozen makes the drink cooler!), feel free to use a combination of blackberries and raspberries too.
2 handful of spinach or kale, whichever you have in your fridge.
1 - 2 tbsp of Cocoa powder (adds a chocolaty twist to this bad boy)
1 frozen banana
1 stalk of celery or 1/2 zucchini
1 tbsp chia seeds
1 tbsp flax seeds
Optional* 1 tbsp nut butter (almond, sunflower, cashew, etc.) to cream it up. I personally love almond butter.
Blend and enjoy it outside in the shade!
Without “nerding” out too much of why this Summer Delight is amazing lets just recap briefly. Berries are high in antioxidants. This is a way to provide your body with the resources to fight free radicals (oxidative damage to the cells). The chia and flax help with proper elimination of toxins and wastes materials.
The greens are high in vitamins and minerals, providing your body with the necessary enzymes and intermediates to produce energy! And chocolate… just rocks, need I say more? Cocoa tastes great, is high in antioxidants, zinc (helps with digestion), and magnesium (which helps with nerve and muscle function).
So there you have it folks, enjoy!
